crab comics

For a few years now I’ve been working with Evolutionary Biologist, Mark Laidre, who is a Professor in Dartmouth College’s Biological Sciences Department. We share an appreciation for animals, art and the absurd. A couple of the animals his research is focused on are the terrestrial hermit crab (Coenobita compressus) and the coconut crab (Birgus latro). Mark has invited me to meet the hermit crabs in person in Costa Rica, visit his team of researchers and poke fun at the wonderful things they have learned about the crabs. Some of the resulting pieces are single panel pieces accompanying scientific papers/presentations, others are comic books introducing readers to the basics about terrestrial hermit crabs and their behavior. Very occasionally a few drawings of coconut crabs enter into the scene.

Compressus is a project about housing strategies and dilemmas experienced by terrestrial hermit crabs. It's a project in the works and will be available for sale soon.

Keep an eye on this space for more crab comics to come!
